Handmade Coolie Lampshades

The coolie lampshade is a wide, shallow tapered shade with a distinctive sloped profile. Its open form can work well on table lamps, floor lamps and pendant fittings where a broader shade is needed without adding too much height.

Each coolie lampshade is handmade in our UK workshop and can be ordered from our standard range or developed as a bespoke coolie lampshade for a specific project. We can make coolie shades in a wide choice of fabrics, linings, trims and finishes, including customer’s own material where suitable.

What Is a Coolie Lampshade?

A coolie lampshade has a smaller top diameter and a much wider lower diameter, creating a low, sloped form. It is more open than many traditional tapered shapes and has a stronger horizontal presence than a cone lampshade.

The shape can be useful where a lamp base needs width and visual balance, or where a pendant shade needs a flatter, more expansive outline.

Choosing the Right Coolie Lampshade

Coolie lampshades are often chosen for table lamps, floor lamps, bedrooms, hospitality interiors and relaxed decorative schemes. The wide lower ring gives the shade a generous appearance, while the lower height can help keep the overall lamp proportion under control.

Fabric choice is especially important with this shape, as the broad surface can make pattern, texture and colour more visible.
