FAQ Series: Hard Shades vs Soft Shades - What is the Difference?

Jul 04, 2025

When choosing a lampshade, the decision goes beyond shape and style - it also influences how light interacts with your space. One of the most fundamental choices is between a hard backed (hard shade) and a soft backed (soft shade) construction. Understanding the difference can help you select the right shade for both function and ambiance.

Hard Shades

Hard shades are made using rigid materials as a liner such as PVC or acrylic, forming a structured and crisp shape. These are then covered or laminated with fabric, paper, or other decorative materials to achieve a desired aesthetic. Because the lining is solid, hard shades can be more directional with the light, producing a brighter and more focused beam. This makes them ideal for task lighting, reading areas, or any space where direct illumination is key.Their construction method also lends itself to a cleaner more geometric look. Soft Shades

In contrast, soft shades are crafted by stretching fabric - like silk, linen, or cotton - over a metal frame, often sewn or glued into place. These shades can allow more light to filter through the fabric, resulting in a gentler, diffused glow. This creates a warm and atmospheric effect, perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, or any space where a softer, more inviting ambiance is preferred. By manipulating the fabric through pattern cutting and stretching soft shades can take on a greater variety of shapes than hard shades and a wide variety of organic shapes become possible, from jellyfish or mushroom cap shaped domes and bell shapes to seedpod or sea urchin looking pieces. Of course when used in conjunction with traditional fabric manipulation techniques we can create traditional lamp shade looks such as a pleated lampshade or a gathered lampshade
